Drill of the Week: Quick reaction drill
Goal: Build confidence under pressure and improve decision-making when the pocket collapses.
Overview:
A quarterback’s ability to stay composed in a chaotic pocket separates good players from great ones. This drill simulates game-like pressure to help you improve footwork, awareness, and quick decision-making.
Setup:
Equipment Needed:
• 4-6 large tackling dummies or cones
• Football
• 2-3 assistants or teammates
Field Setup:
• Create a 5×5-yard pocket area using cones or dummies as “linemen.”
• Position one assistant as the pass rusher and another as a receiver downfield.
Drill Steps:
1. Step 1: Stand in the center of the “pocket” with the football.
2. Step 2: At the whistle, the assistants close in on the pocket, applying simulated pressure by waving pads or moving toward you.
3. Step 3: Maintain calm footwork—shuffle, step up, or roll out as needed—without breaking the pocket prematurely.
4. Step 4: Identify the receiver downfield and deliver a quick, accurate pass before the pocket collapses.
Coaching Points:
• Keep your eyes downfield—don’t stare at the rush.
• Maintain a balanced stance for a quick release.
• React to pressure with subtle movements, not panic scrambles.
Progression Options:
• Intermediate: Add more rushers or tighten the pocket area.
• Advanced: Include an extra defender in coverage to simulate tight passing windows.
Why It Works:
This drill mimics live-game pressure, helping you stay composed and efficient when defenders are closing in. Over time, it sharpens your instincts and builds confidence in making clutch plays.
