QB Drill of the Week: Figure 8 Drill
The Figure 8 Drill is an excellent exercise to develop pocket awareness, footwork, and the ability to maintain focus while under simulated pressure. This drill mimics real-game situations where a quarterback needs to evade defenders while keeping their eyes downfield.
Purpose:
- Improve foot quickness and pocket mobility.
- Enhance ball security during movement.
- Train quarterbacks to reset their throwing platform quickly.
Setup:
- Place two cones approximately 5 yards apart, forming the endpoints of the "8" shape.
- The quarterback starts at one cone with a football in hand.
- Add a coach or teammate to simulate defensive pressure with a hand shield or by moving unpredictably.
Execution:
- The quarterback weaves around the cones in a figure-& motion using quick, choppy steps while holding the football in the proper pocket position.
- Emphasize keeping eyes up and scanning downfield during the movement.
- Once the QB completes a full "8," they quickly reset their feet and throw to a designated target (such as a receiver or stationary target).
Add Variations:
- Pressure simulation: Have a coach or teammate randomly close in to simulate pressure.
- Decision-making: Call out different receiver routes or targets mid-drill.
Key Coaching Points:
- Body posture: Stay low and balanced to maintain control during movement.
- Ball security: Keep two hands on the ball while moving through the drill.
- Reset mechanics: Focus on proper foot placement and shoulder alignment before throwing.
- Tempo: Work at game speed to maximize
Benefits:
- Develops instinctive pocket awareness.
- Improves the ability to throw accurately on the run.
- Enhances reaction time and decision-making under pressure.
